When the word “skater” is mentioned, one first assumes said speaker is referring to a guy. There are girls as passionate as boys that can ride freestyle or downhill as good as any guy on a board. It all just comes down to one emotion: passion.

Skatera is clothing line designed for skater girls. They are more about practicality than fashion, but it still looks good; they are not about trends but are trendsetters. Skatera is about the skating, the lifestyle, and the street culture. The designer, Pamela Zoolalian, and founder, Chris Chaput, live by this skate-culture philosophy; they are champions of the sport and true riders who have joined forces to provide the passionate individual a clothing option that will suit their skating needs.

Their clothes are seam reinforced, their denim has added spandex for comfort, their prints have a splash of punk, and all designs are thought out to be suitable to skate with.

Take a look at their jeans and you will see that when Skatera is tagged as being a true rider-passionate brand. There was no exaggeration in the previous statement.

Maui has a peculiar geometrical logo; it’s round, it’s big and it has some odd colored shapes dropped in the middle. It looks like a cookie! Well, those shapes are a triangle, a circle, a square, and a rectangle, and, for your amusement, those are the symbols of the four elements of nature: earth, water, sky and fire.  (Heart! To finish the needed Captain Planet refference)

Maui’s clothing collection ultimate goal is to be “an extension of a lifestyle.” A philosophy that was written when the founders of Maui first gathered back in 1980 and has henceforth taken the brand to be a successful part of the surfing culture. Their shapes, colors and graphics transcend the relaxed mentality and positivism of the surfer archetype.

Going back to the cookie logo, here’s the story: there were once three surfer dudes baking cookies, try to make a business out of it. When they realized the only thing that was coming out of the oven were ashes, they took a look at themselves and decided to create a business that spoke the same language of their lifestyle and passions. Then a clothing line was birthed; one that dedicates its life to nature and surfing. That is how the cookie crumbles!

Lightning Bolt are the true originators of the leader surfboard company back in the day. We are talking old school, back in 1968 Hawaii. They were able to understand the demand, the incorporation of technology, physics, and new materials. In doing so they rushed up various surfboard manufacturers and made their lightning ray famous.

Today, LB is still present in the business and is now introducing a clothing collection both for men and women, capturing what was going on back in ’68. The shirts and trunks can almost pass as true vintage pieces; LB has excelled in capturing the essence in style graphically and in shape.

Dualistic Shangri-la

There are cute artist-developed worlds that are fun to look at and then there are cute worlds that have that razor edge to them, the ones that slice through into real emotion while maintaining visual appeal. Simone Legno has magically crafted the latter. The artist behind the international Tokidoki brand, Legno mixes the soft lovable shapes and colors of Japanese illustration and an underlying sense seriousness that gives depth and meaning to the world that he shares.

Legno makes it clear that he draws inspiration from all things Japan.  From the beauty and serenity of traditional Japanese women to the snap-crackle-pop culture that flashes its in-your-face, bright, color palette, Legno loves it all. He respects and finds a seemingly endless stream of creativity in the street fashion, art and design that are unmistakably Japanese.

A native Italiano, Legno began the creation process in his youth where he constructed his own toys to play with. This childlike perspective has bled into his current projects. An honest sensibility permeates his artwork and, I don’t know about you, but I can’t help but smile each time I check out his website www.Tokidoki.it to see what he’s been up to.

I’m not the only one who thinks Legno has got it goin’ on. He collaborates with well-known brands such as Fujitsu, Mikasa, Hello Kitty, New Era, X-Box, Smashbox, Ride, Levi’s and Skull Candy (just to name a few).  Chances are that you’ve seen his work in a few different places on your weekend shopping sprees. He’s young, talented and pretty damn good-looking to boot.  Can’t wait to see what is in store for this creator of a universe that is all his own.

We were born in the 80s and we definitely show it. From big hair and bright colors to punk glam, our fashion show this past September at The Vagabond showcased it all. We highlighted some of our favorite brands both local and from everywhere else and added some Wasabi Black Magic, in the form of our models: Bianca Baez, Suki Berry, Amanda Chapin, Bianca D’An, Veronica Gessa, Chelsea Leeburn and Milan Vega. And since you can’t have magic without a magician, we had Makeup artists Noelle Purcel and Cristal Yellow and Hairstylists Doris Alicea, Claudia Garcia and Adriana Correles casting spells.

Starting at our models’ feet we danced down the runway in Poetic Licence heels, Gotta Flurt embellished high tops, and local favorite Ombu slip ons.

All the ladies’ legs were decked out in every kind and color of hosiery thanks to We Love Colors.

The original 80’s threads, from punk leather vests and bustiers to glam glitter tops and an acid wash mini dress were provided by The Collage and Velvet Horses.

And of course where would the ladies be without something new with throwback flair? Enter New Breed Girl and Pet Project with colorful, fun t-shirts that our local artist Gabriel Gaviria gave the boxer cutter treatment to for that torn up I-don’t-give-a-fuck look we love.

To help us keep our pants up and outfits together we decked ourselves out in Armourdillo belts.

Eco-friendly and local Ecoist provided us with purses to swing down the runway, while High Fydelity supplied us with bags complete with built-in speakers.

Von Zipper was there to save our pretty eyes from the blinding camera flashes and glittering disco balls.

All in all the show was just a spectacular taste of what Wasabi Fashion Kult has in store for the world, and we couldn’t have done it without our fashionable partners in crime.

I Want Candy! (Or at least a handbag that is equally as delicious.)

Ecoist, a Miami-based, eco-fashion accessory company, has partnered up with Mars Retail group to create candy-wrapper handbags that appeal to the fashion-lover, candy-consumer and environmentalist in all of us.

For your toting pleasure, the misprints and leftover M&Ms, Skittles, Twix, Snickers and Starburst wrappers that we’ve come to know and love are now available through the Ecoist distribution in the form of tasty little handbags.  This line can be found in Ecoist’s network of 2000+ shopping venues as well as on www.ecoist.com .  The collaboration will prevent upwards of five million candy wrappers from flooding the already flooded landfills and Mars, Inc. has made a commitment to reducing its waste by 3% a year.

Like trees?  I sure do.  There will be many more for you to love when Ecoist and Mars plant a brand new one each time a bag from this line is sold.
